1328 ET - The Canadian lumber industry faces a triple threat from the U.S. government increased tariffs and new regulations on softwood lumber imports from across the border. The sector is used to duties and tariffs, but Kurt Niquidet, president of the BC Lumber Trade Council told the WSJ that never to this extent. The threat is threefold: typical and historical anti-dumping duties appraised annually, Trump's potential sweeping tariffs and an unprecedented investigation into lumber as a national security threat launched over the weekend. "That's what the executive order is. We've never had that before," he said. This isn't welcome news, Niquidet says, while Canada faces a broad base tariff which is still yet to be resolved. "So a lot of uncertainty in the sector right now," he said. (adriano.marchese@wsj.com)
