Adds analyst comment, additional details on allocated capacity from paragraph 5

March 11 (Reuters) - The National Energy System Operator announced on Tuesday that Britain's auction to secure sufficient electricity capacity for 2028/29 has cleared at 60 pounds per kilowatt (kW) per year.

Britain launched its power capacity market in 2014, offering to pay providers for making capacity available to ensure the country has enough power.

The auctions are usually held about four years in advance of the delivery date, with another auction for a smaller amount of capacity held a year before delivery.

The latest capacity auction resulted in the procurement of 43,055.07 MW across 669 Capacity Market Units.

The price of this year's auction is slightly down from 65 pounds/kW in the previous auction in 2024, analysts at Bernstein said in a note.

"The expectation of tighter power markets alongside a growing share of intermittent renewable generation, is leading to elevated capacity market clearing prices," Bernstein said.

Winners of contracts included utilities such as SSE SSE.L, Uniper, Drax DRX.L and RWE RWEG.DE.

The majority of capacity contracts, 68.3%, were awarded to existing power generation plants with 15.2% also awarded to existing interconnectors with other countries, the documents showed.

Plants to be newly built secured 4.9% of the capacity while new interconnectors secured 0.6%.
