When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 18x, you may consider Radian Group Inc. (NYSE:RDN) as a highly attractive investment with its 7.6x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
Recent earnings growth for Radian Group has been in line with the market. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this modest earnings performance may begin to slide. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Radian Group's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 3.9%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 31% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 1.0% per annum during the coming three years according to the five analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 11% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we can see why Radian Group is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of Radian Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Radian Group (of which 3 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
