Leonardo DRS was awarded a $16.9 million contract by the U.S. Army to modernize control systems for certain self-propelled howitzers.

The Arlington, Va., defense company said Wednesday that it will modernize the Paladin Electric Servo Amplifier, or PESA, electric-weapon control system for the M109A7 Paladin self-propelled howitzer.

The howitzer is an artillery weapon capable of both low- and high-angle fire, falling somewhere between a cannon and a mortar.

Leonardo's modernization efforts for the PESA will include the development of a next-generation prototype utilizing current electrical technologies. The updates, which aims to improve producibility and maintainability, will enable the continued operation of the vehicle with no degradation to current capabilities, the company said.
