While CECO Environmental Corp. (NASDAQ:CECO) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 14% in the last quarter. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. In fact, during that period, the share price climbed 444%. Impressive! So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. Of course what matters most is whether the business can improve itself sustainably, thus justifying a higher price.
Since the stock has added US$57m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' During five years of share price growth, CECO Environmental actually saw its EPS drop 6.1% per year.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.
In contrast revenue growth of 14% per year is probably viewed as evidence that CECO Environmental is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. CECO Environmental's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 11%. It has to be noted that the recent return falls short of the 40% shareholders have gained each year, over half a decade. Although the share price growth has slowed, the longer term story points to a business well worth watching. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - CECO Environmental has 2 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
