Sotera Health (SHC) said Friday its subsidiary Sterigenics U.S. agreed to pay nearly $31 million to settle 97 ethylene oxide lawsuits related to its former facility in Willowbrook, Illinois.
The lawsuits alleged that the Willowbrook facility emitted ethylene oxide gas, posing a safety hazard to the surrounding communities.
The settlement, which does not constitute an admission of liability, is subject to 100% opt-in consents from the plaintiffs, the company said. It also requires the stay of trials that were scheduled to begin in April and June.
Sterigenics said it has the right to waive the 100% participation requirement, in which case the settlement would be binding on only those plaintiffs that agree to participate.
The company previously agreed to pay $408 million to settle more than 870 lawsuits tied to the facility.
