CVS Health (NYSE:CVS) Has Affirmed Its Dividend Of $0.665

Simply Wall St.
04/08

The board of CVS Health Corporation (NYSE:CVS) has announced that it will pay a dividend of $0.665 per share on the 1st of May. Based on this payment, the dividend yield on the company's stock will be 4.2%, which is an attractive boost to shareholder returns.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that CVS Health's stock price has increased by 39% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

CVS Health's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, CVS Health's dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 53% of free cash flows. This leaves plenty of cash for reinvestment into the business.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 71.4%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 45% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

CVS Health Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $1.10 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of $2.66. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 9.2% a year over that time. Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. CVS Health has seen earnings per share falling at 6.4% per year over the last five years. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.

Our Thoughts On CVS Health's Dividend

Overall, we think CVS Health is a solid choice as a dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't raised this year. While the payments look sustainable for now, earnings have been shrinking so the dividend could come under pressure in the future. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. To that end, CVS Health has 2 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
