MW Costco's sales still rose in March despite deeper economic uncertainty

By Bill Peters

The warehouse retailer last month said that shoppers could remain 'choiceful' as they navigate higher prices

Costco Wholesale Corp. on Wednesday said sales through last month rose 8.6% year over year to $25.51 billion, even as higher costs of living kept shoppers cautious.

Same-store sales for the period - the five weeks that ended April 6 - were up 6.4%. E-commerce sales rose 16.2%.

Shares of Costco $(COST)$ were up fractionally after hours. The stock finished the day 6.2% higher, amid a broader market recovery.

Costco last month said that shoppers could remain "choiceful" as they navigate higher prices and the potential for more upheaval in the economy, as President Donald Trump uses tariffs to get nations to renegotiate trade deals.

Trump on Wednesday announced a halt on "reciprocal" tariffs on many countries, as well as a reduced tariff rate of 10%, for 90 days. However, he said he was raising the rate on China to 125%.

Afterward, markets on Wednesday rebounded. They tumbled last week after Trump announced plans for sweeping tariffs on trading partners.
