Edison International's Southern California division plans to rebuild electrical distribution infrastructure affected by wildfires in January for $860 million to $925 million.

Southern California Edison said Friday the rebuild, focused on areas in Malibu and Altadena, would underground new distribution equipment over 153 circuit miles.

The undergrounding includes nearly all distribution power lines in high fire risk areas within the burn scars of affected communities, the company said. Power lines that are not undergrounded will be hardened with covered conductor.

Some sections of the grid will be completed in a few months, while others will take several years. The scope and timing of the plan depends on permitting, ability to secure funding and other factors.

The company expects the plan to reduce Public Safety Power Shutoffs and enhance service reliability for customers.

The company also acknowledged the possibility SCE's equipment was involved in the cause of the Eaton Fire, and said the investigation is ongoing.
