Market Chatter: US Eyes Major LNG Deal with Japan, South Korea, Taiwan Tied to Tariff Talks

The Trump administration is pushing a major LNG deal--the Alaska LNG project--that involves Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, which could influence tariff reductions.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that negotiations will be handled country by country, with US President Donald Trump being personally involved. The proposed $44 billion project would see the three Asian countries finance and commit to buying US gas, potentially lowering the trade deficit and creating jobs, Nikkei Asia reported Wednesday.

Trump confirmed discussions with South Korea and hinted at broader one-stop trade negotiations, while also noting China's interest in a similar deal, according to the report.
