U.S. stock indexes are having a tough year: Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 are in a correction, meaning they have fallen at least 10% from a recent high.

With both rallying for a second day, here are the levels they need to reach to exit correction territory:

-- Dow: 41410.15. The blue-chip index closed at 39186.98 on Tuesday.

-- S&P 500: 5481.05. The benchmark index closed at 5287.76 on Tuesday.

The Nasdaq Composite is in a bear market, having fallen 20% from its recent high. To exit bear-market territory, the index must rise to 18321.50, up from Tuesday's close of 16300.42.
