Sphere Entertainment (NYSE:SPHR) shareholders are up 14% this past week, but still in the red over the last five years

It's nice to see the Sphere Entertainment Co. (NYSE:SPHR) share price up 14% in a week. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. In fact, the share price is down 64%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

The recent uptick of 14% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

Sphere Entertainment wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

Over half a decade Sphere Entertainment reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 2.8% for each year. While far from catastrophic that is not good. With neither profit nor revenue growth, the loss of 10% per year doesn't really surprise us. The chance of imminent investor enthusiasm for this stock seems slimmer than Louise Brooks. Ultimately, it may be worth watching - should revenue pick up, the share price might follow.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Sphere Entertainment's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. We note that Sphere Entertainment's TSR, at -21% is higher than its share price return of -64%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.

A Different Perspective

Sphere Entertainment shareholders are down 27% for the year, but the market itself is up 9.3%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 4% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
