American Airlines (AAL) said Monday that it sued JetBlue Airways (JBLU) to seek damages after the unwinding of the Northeast Alliance.

Steve Johnson, American Airlines vice chair and chief strategy officer, said the lawsuit comes after partnership talks between the companies ended without a renewed agreement. According to Johnson, American Airlines delayed its claim when it was in talks with JetBlue.

"Although we proposed a very attractive proposition to JetBlue and its customers and team, it became clear over time that JetBlue was focused on different business priorities," said Johnson.

JetBlue Airways did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.

JetBlue stock was rising nearly 5% in premarket activity, while American Airlines was up fractionally.
