Market Chatter: Apple Sales Data Sought by Indian Agency Amid Probe on Amazon, Flipkart

Apple (AAPL), Xiaomi and other smartphone companies were asked by India's Enforcement Directorate to provide their sales data as part of an investigation into Amazon.com (AMZN) and Walmart's (WMT) Flipkart, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The Enforcement Directorate, India's financial crime agency, was looking at dealings between smartphone players and the two companies, which have been under investigation in India for years for alleged violation of laws by stocking and exerting control over goods they list online, according to the report.

The agency had also sought any financial contracts for online sales signed by smartphone companies, the report said.

Apple got the agency's directive in March, the report said, citing one of the sources.

The agency approached the smartphone companies only to ask for information and it was unlikely they will be charged in the case, a government official reportedly said.

Apple, Xiaomi, Amazon, Flipkart and the Enforcement Directorate didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
