TPG Telecom (ASX:TPG) said it has successfully sent the first direct-to-smartphone text message using Lynk's satellite communication technology, according to a Monday statement.

The company said the text message was sent using popular devices like the iPhone, implying that the technology is usable without any modifications to already existing smartphone devices.

The technology will be used to improve rural and remote connectivity in Australia, the statement added.

The telecom company plans to conduct additional trials in different locations later this year and will explore voice calls and limited data services in the future.
