Cisco Systems said it has created a new quantum chip and opened a quantum lab as it looks to accelerate quantum-computing and networking applications.

The networking-equipment company on Tuesday said its new quantum network entanglement chip, developed as a prototype in collaboration with UC Santa Barbara, is designed to enable quantum networks to scale and connect quantum processors for practical applications.

The quantum network entanglement chip works with existing fiber-optic infrastructure and is ready for scalable system deployment, the company said.

The new chip is also energy efficient, consuming less than 1 megawatt of power, the San Jose, Calif., company said.

Cisco also said it has opened its Cisco Quantum Labs facility in Santa Monica, Calif.

Researchers at the lab will work on the new entanglement chip and advance other research prototypes such as entanglement-distribution protocols, a distributed quantum-computing compiler, and a Quantum Network Development Kit, the company said.
