Tesla's China sales continued to decline in April as the U.S. automaker faced intensifying competition from its local rivals.

The company sold 58,459 China-made vehicles in April, down 6.0% from a year earlier and 26% lower than in March, marking the fourth consecutive month of both year-on-year and month-on-month declines, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association on Wednesday.

While Tesla continued to lose market share, overall Chinese auto demand remained strong in April, supported by the government's trade-in program. As of April 24, 2.7 million cars had been traded in nationwide under the scheme, the CPCA said.

Chinese automakers posted robust sales in April, with some hitting record highs, the agency added.

BYD led the market with a record 372,615 units sold, followed by Geely Automobile with 125,563 deliveries.

Tesla ranked fourth in China's car sales last month.

The CPCA estimated that sales of electric and hybrid passenger cars rose 42% from a year earlier to about 1.14 million units in April.
