0828 ET - Walmart says it has been gaining share of the grocery market by drawing in more upper-income shoppers. The retailer's U.S. grocery business saw comparable sales up in the mid-single-digit percentage range from higher transactions, unit volume and share gains. Cost-conscious consumers are still spending on essentials like groceries but looking to trade down into less expensive retailers and products. Customers across income levels are responding well to Walmart's deals and price rollbacks, the company says. The sales gains were broad-based across food categories, including dairy, pantry products and fresh foods, Walmart says, adding that its own private grocery brand increased its customer penetration during the quarter.
