Policymakers Should Force Dominant Tech Firms to Divest Cloud Operations, Lobby Group Says -- Market Talk

0916 GMT - Cloud computing infrastructure should be regulated like a utility, according to a new report from lobby group the Open Markets Institute. The report argues that dominant players in the sector--such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google--should be obliged to divest their cloud businesses. "Society's growing dependence on cloud infrastructure--including organizations that provide essential services or gather highly sensitive and confidential data--poses serious risks," it says, arguing that cloud providers can't be trusted to ensure resilience. The report comes not long after Microsoft President Brad Smith flew to Brussels to announce that the company plans to expand its data center capacity in Europe in the coming years, saying it respects European laws in the face of growing tensions between the EU and U.S. on tech regulation and trade.
