Yomiuri: Nissan Plans to Close Its Iconic Oppama Plant

Nissan Motor Co. is making plans to shutter two factories in Kanagawa Prefecture its iconic Oppama plant and the Shonan plant run by its subsidiary Nissan Shatai Co. as part of its restructuring efforts, sources said on Friday.

Nissan Motor announced earlier this week it planned to close seven plants in Japan and overseas by the end of fiscal 2027 but had not revealed the name of the plants.

Nissan, which has incurred massive losses, is implementing its largest-ever plant restructuring in an effort to rapidly improve its performance.

The company has not closed one of its main plants in Japan since it shuttered its Murayama plant in Tokyo about 25 years ago. The move suggests a fundamental overhaul, as it would mean Nissan parting with its vehicle assembly plants in Kanagawa Prefecture, which have been part of the company since its foundation in 1933.

Overseas, Nissan plans to end production in South Africa, India and Argentina, and close two factories in Mexico.
