1552 ET - Retailers and manufacturers looking to beat tariffs boosted imports into Southern California ports. The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in April handled 859,058 import containers, measured in 20-foot equivalent units, a 13% increase from March and up 9.9% over the same month last year. Import volumes are expected to plunge in May after the Trump administration temporarily raised tariffs on imports from China to 145%. Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka says he expects "a softening of global trade" because of tariffs and trade uncertainty.(paul.berger@wsj.com)
