United Airlines reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with the union representing its 28,000 flight attendants.

The Chicago-based carrier said on Friday the deal will provide industry-leading wages and provide other improvements to members of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA. Flight attendants would also receive a signing bonus and other scheduling and quality of life improvements as part of the five-year contract.

United said the agreement is subject to approval from the union's executive council and local presidents. If approved it will then be sent to flight attendants for ratification.

In March the union held a worldwide "Day of Action" amid negotiations with United, and picketed at almost 20 airports calling for management to increase flight attendants' wages.
