Guinea's Mining License Revocation Could Raise Aluminium Prices, MS Says -- Market Talk

1024 GMT - The revocation of mining licenses in Guinea--home to nearly a third of the global bauxite supply--could drive up global aluminium prices, according to Morgan Stanley. Guinea's military government reclaimed 51 mining licenses to repossess concessions for operations that haven't started or where permits are being underutilized. "The move injects fresh uncertainty into the bauxite trade and could ripple through the entire aluminium value chain if disruptions persist," analysts at the bank say. Bauxite tightness and alumina price increases could squeeze margins of aluminium smelters at a time when reduced production of alumina in China is already supporting prices, according to MS.
