Health-care companies fell as concerns about UnitedHealth Group persisted.
UnitedHealth Group shares fell by more than 5% after analysts at brokerage HSBC warned that, even after a plunge in the stock, further losses were possible due to struggles with its medical-loss ratio, and other factors.
UnitedHealth contested a report on the U.K. newspaper The Guardian's Web site alleging payments to nursing homes were intended to suppress hospital visits by insurance customers.
Medical-device maker Medtronic plans to separate its diabetes business into a stand-alone company, the company said, in a move that hives off a division that had struggled but recently returned to growth.
