Your guide to what markets and services are open and closed over Memorial Day weekend

Caution was returning to the stock market ahead of the long Memorial Day weekend, with bond markets set to close early on Friday.

Stocks have recovered from peak tariff turmoil in April, but the impact of tariffs and the proposed Republican tax bill remain open questions. A fresh rout in the $29 trillion Treasury market also has investors on edge before the three-day weekend, with U.S. financial markets all set to be closed on the Monday Memorial Day holiday.

See: Trump's tax bill is about to get even pricier. What that means for markets and your wallet.

And here's what else to keep in mind in terms of closures heading into the weekend, as well as what's open and closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 26.

Are financial markets open for Memorial Day?

The U.S. bond market gets an early start on the long weekend, ending business an hour early on Friday at 2 p.m. Eastern.

The stock market operates regular hours ahead of the holiday, but both the equity and bond markets will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day.

Do the post office, UPS and FedEx deliver mail and packages on Memorial Day?

The U.S. Postal Service $(USPS)$ will not deliver mail on Monday, but service will be business-as-usual on the Friday before.

FedEx $(FDX)$ services - including regular pickup and delivery, FedEx Freight and FedEx logistics - will also not be operating, except for Custom Critical shipments, which will be available. And FedEx Office stores will have modified hours; look up your nearest location's hours and other details here.

Similarly, UPS $(UPS)$ will not offer pickup or delivery services, apart from its Express Critical shipments filled by global logistics firm MNX (call 1-800-714-8779 or visit mnx.com for details). UPS Store locations may be also closed, but you can check with your local store for specific hours of operation.

Are banks closed on Memorial Day?

Yes, you should expect banks to be closed on Memorial Day, as Federal Reserve banks and their branches are observing the holiday on Monday, and most other banks follow the Federal Reserve's holiday schedule. But check with your local banking branch to be sure.

You can still use ATMs to withdraw or deposit cash, of course. And banking services like transferring money may also be available on your bank's app or website.

Are government offices like the DMV open on Memorial Day?

Since Memorial Day is a federal holiday, all nonessential city, state and federal offices and courthouses are closed (and the same generally applies to state government offices). But you can certainly check with your local offices.

Are schools open on Memorial Day?

Schools are typically closed on Memorial Day, although it's always best to check with your local school district.

Are stores like Costco, Walmart and Target, or pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens, open on Memorial Day?

Most of them are - except for Costco $(COST)$, which is closed for most national holidays, including Memorial Day. And while Walgreens $(WBA)$ and CVS $(CVS)$ stores are open, their pharmacies may not be - or, they may have reduced hours. So check with your local Walgreens or CVS store.

But in fact, the three-day Memorial Day weekend is one of the biggest shopping events of the year, according to RetailMeNot, with many retailers historically offering discounts on mattresses and furniture, in particular, as well as seasonal clothes and goodies for your yard or patio this time of year.
