May 21 (Reuters) - A powerful U.S. national security panel known as CFIUS on Wednesday submitted a recommendation to President Donald Trump on Nippon Steel's fraught $14.9 billion bid for U.S. Steel, a person familiar with the matter said.
The submission complies with an executive order signed by Trump that gives the President until June 5 to decide whether to approve or scuttle the merger. Reuters could not learn the content of CFIUS's recommendation.
The companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
