Market Chatter: Apple, Google App Stores to Require Age Verification in Texas if State Bill Becomes Law

Apple (AAPL) and Alphabet's Google (GOOG, GOOGL) will be forced to verify the age of Texas users of their app stores if a bill approved by state lawmakers is signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, Reuters reported Tuesday.

The proposed law would require app store operators to verify the age of device users and require parental consent to download apps for those under 18, the report said.

Utah passed a similar law earlier this year, and Congressional lawmakers have also introduced a federal bill, according to the report.

Apple and Google oppose the Texas bill, arguing it is overly broad by requiring age verification for harmless apps that report the weather as well as social media apps that have sparked the controversy, the report said.

Apple and Google did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
