U.S. Natural Gas Sinks As June Contract Expires -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
2025/05/29

U.S. natural gas settles lower with the June contract going off the board down 5.7% at $3.204/mmBtu. Much of the selling could be related to the June expiration, "that may have attempted to align with sharply lower next-day spot pricing," Ritterbusch says in a note. "We are hesitant to attach too much importance to the ongoing temperature moderation at this early stage of the cooling cycle, and we will reiterate a view that the storage surplus while likely to increase well into next month, is unlikely to approach a burdensome supply situation." Tomorrow's EIA storage report is expected to show an injection of 93 Bcf, according to a Wall Street Journal survey of analysts, trimming the surplus over the five-year average to 85 Bcf from 90 Bcf the week before. Gas for July delivery falls 5% to $3.557/mmBtu. (anthony.harrup@wsj.com)
