Auckland International Airport Ltd. is embarking on a significant expansion of its domestic airfield to accommodate future growth in regional air capacity. The $147 million project will add four new regional aircraft parking positions and 8,500m2 of additional airfield space, aimed at increasing regional seat capacity and improving national connectivity. This upgrade is expected to unlock nearly 100,000 additional seats annually for travelers to regional destinations across New Zealand by 2028. The airport's Chief Executive, Carrie Hurihanganui, emphasized the importance of reliable and efficient air connectivity for supporting New Zealand's regions and economy. Currently, Auckland Airport facilitates around 140 regional flights daily, and the draft Master Plan anticipates regional travel will grow significantly by 2047. The project aligns with plans for a potential future regional pier and terminal headhouse. While regional operations will continue unaffected, temporary changes to car parking near the domestic terminal will occur later this year due to construction activities.
