Nokia will lead an European Union-funded consortium to develop unmanned drone technology, in collaboration with defense groups such as Leonardo, Safran and Saab.
The project, funded under the EU's initiative Chips Joint Undertaking, is expected to generate around 90 million euros ($102.3 million) in revenue, 50 products and more than 15 new patents by 2035, Nokia said Wednesday.
The collaboration will develop five unmanned vehicles tailored to meet Europe's needs, including tackling emergencies and protecting critical infrastructure, the Finnish telecommunications company said.
A spokesperson for Nokia denied that the project had a defense angle, and said that its sole purpose "is to support Europe's technology resilience" as well as the European drone and robotics industry.
The consortium brings together 42 partners and four affiliates from 13 countries, including large companies, startups and universities.
Nokia didn't disclose the amount of funding awarded by the EU to the consortium.
