A lack of hotel rooms in Macau is impeding its diversification from a gaming-focused economy to a mass-market-driven model, the South China Morning Post reported Monday, citing Galaxy Entertainment (HKG:0027) Chairman Francis Lui Yiu-tung.

The city needs improvements, especially an additional 15,000 hotel rooms priced below HK$1,000, and better policies surrounding the development of nearby Hengqin Island, China, to help solve the problem, the report said, citing Lui.

In 2024, Macau welcomed 35 million visitors and had 45,000 rooms. In comparison, Las Vegas has 160,000 rooms and welcomed 40 million visitors, the report said.
