Though U.S. stocks have bounced back in recent weeks, they've continued to lag behind other major indexes around the world.

Take a popular exchange-traded fund from Vanguard, for instance.

The Vanguard Total International Stock ETF rose Friday and is on track to close at a record. The fund , which tracks a FTSE index of world stocks that excludes U.S. shares, is up more than 15% for the year, compared with the S&P 500's 2.1% gain.

Some investors say they've moved more of their money abroad, drawn to more attractive valuations in other corners of the globe. Mike Bailey, director of research at FBB Capital Partners, said he is looking to diversify his stock holdings.

"No particular region is going to dominate forever," Bailey said. "We're frankly just looking at valuations."
