STOCKHOLM--Swedish steelmaker SSAB will supply Volvo Car with steel produced with almost zero fossil-carbon emissions.

Delivery of the steel, known as SSAB Zero, will begin this year and be used in key components for the automaker's upcoming fully electric EX60 SUV as well as other cars based on its next-generation car design.

SSAB Zero is steel made of recycled scrap metal and produced with fossil-free electricity and biogas.

"One of the biggest sources of [carbon-dioxide] emissions in our production process is the steel we use to build our cars, averaging 25% of all material-related emissions for a new Volvo car," said Volvo Car's chief manufacturing and supply chain officer, Francesca Gamboni.

"We are working towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, and cutting steel-related emissions really has the potential to move the needle."
