United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain says General Motors' plan to invest in U.S. factories shows President Trump's automotive tariffs are working.

GM on Tuesday said it was bringing production of two gas-powered vehicles, the Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox, to the U.S. as part of a $4 billion plan to boost its U.S. production capacity to 2 million vehicles annually.

GM currently produces about 1.6 million vehicles a year in the country, according to consultancy AutoForecast Solutions.

Fain, a relentless critic of Trump during last year's presidential campaign, nonetheless embraced the president's tariffs.

"While other companies drag their feet, GM is showing that strategic auto tariffs work with a massive $4 billion investment that will create thousands of good paying union jobs ... This is just the beginning," Fain in a statement after GM's announcement.
