Restaurant Segment Trends Remain a Mixed Bag -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
06/13

1421 ET - Though recent data has been largely reassuring for restaurant demand overall, trends are varied within brands and segments, Baird analysts say in a note. Demand for casual dining has held up, but quick-service dining appears softer, with comparable sales growth slowing in May from April and 1Q, the analysts say. That trend could signal continued weak spending patterns among lower-income consumers, they say. With an uptick in jobless claims and tight monetary policy, the consumer spending outlook remains shaky, so restaurant sales could be mixed in the second half of the year, they say. Those with tangible sales drivers, like Domino's and Chipotle, will likely fare best, they say. (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
