FutureFuel Corporation, a manufacturer specializing in custom and performance chemicals and biofuels, has announced a strategic shift in its operations. The company has decided to temporarily idle its biodiesel production following the completion of its existing contractual obligations expected by the end of June. This move comes amidst ongoing regulatory uncertainties, particularly the lack of clarity regarding the Clean Fuel Producers Tax Credit, which was anticipated to succeed the expired $1 per gallon Blenders Tax Credit. Despite this, FutureFuel expressed optimism over the recent proposal by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to significantly increase biomass-based diesel mandates for 2026 and 2027. FutureFuel plans to redirect its production capacity to bolster the growth of its specialty chemicals business. The company anticipates the introduction of new product capacity at its facility by mid-2025 and is actively pursuing a strong pipeline of chemical projects scheduled for the latter half of 2025 and 2026. FutureFuel remains committed to resuming biodiesel production once the regulatory landscape becomes more favorable, leveraging its Batesville facility's flexible production capabilities to transition seamlessly between specialty chemicals and biodiesel.
