Southland Holdings Inc. has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the West Gates DIW Pond Expansion at Denver International Airport. This project, aimed at mitigating environmental hazards from airplane de-icing fluid, showcases a blend of innovation and sustainable construction practices. The team constructed a state-of-the-art drainage tunnel system beneath active runways, using a modified 132-inch diameter Single Shield Tunnel Boring Machine named "Maverick." The project includes 4,400 linear feet of FRP pipe, four pond cells with a total capacity of 21.6 million gallons, and a 1-million-gallon DIW storage tank. The strategic design and execution earned an Envision Gold rating for sustainability, setting a new standard in green infrastructure without disrupting airport operations.
