Swedish Armed Forces Team Up With Telia, Ericsson's NorthStar 5G Program

The Swedish Armed Forces joined Telia and Ericsson's NorthStar 5G innovation program, in a move to enhance the country's defense capabilities.

Swedish telecommunications operator Telia said Tuesday that the partnership aims to strengthen military communications, logistics and security, while supporting Sweden's operational role within the NATO alliance.

A trial of new 5G technology by the country's military will test communication connections and positioning solutions for vehicles, equipment and personnel, as well as temporary connectivity in areas without regular coverage, the company added.

"Geopolitical changes mean increased demands for innovative defense capabilities. Access to new technology and robust connectivity are central to resilient defense," Telia Sweden Chief Executive Anders Olsson said.

The collaboration comes as European countries seek to reshape their defense capabilities, creating opportunities for industry and investors. Analysts estimate NATO members could add 700 billion euros ($809.30 billion) to 2 trillion euros in extra military spending by 2030, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"We need to utilize the latest technology and all the innovative power of the Swedish private sector. Sweden has unique skills and capabilities in both telecoms and defense technology. This co-operation brings the two together and paves the way for us to take a leading role in 5G within the NATO alliance," Brigadier-General Mattias Hanson, chief information officer of the Swedish Armed Forces said.

NorthStar is a 5G innovation program launched by Telia and Ericsson in 2023.
