** Italian energy group Eni <ENI.MI> has sold a 20% stake in its retail and renewables business Plenitude to U.S. alternative investment manager Ares Management Corp <ARES.N> for about 2 billion euros ($2.3 billion), it said.

** Precision instruments maker Spectris <SXS.L> agreed to a 4.4 billion pound ($5.9 billion) debt-inclusive takeover deal by private equity firm Advent over a rival proposal from KKR <KKR.N>, marking the biggest acquisition in Britain this year.
