U.S. natural gas inventories likely grew by more than usual last week, continuing to push the surplus above the five-year average.

Natural gas in underground storage is expected to have increased by 89 billion cubic feet to 2,891 Bcf in the week ended June 20, according to the average estimate of 11 analysts, brokers and traders surveyed by The Wall Street Journal. Estimates range from an injection of 80 Bcf to an injection of 94 Bcf.

The expected storage build is above the five-year average injection for the week of 79 Bcf, and would increase the surplus to 172 Bcf from 162 Bcf the week before.

Warming weather is likely to slow the pace of inventory builds as summer progresses. After an early start to the injection season and a mild spring led to injections of 1.1 trillion cubic feet between mid-March and mid-June, turning an 11.9% deficit into a 6.1% surplus.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration is scheduled to report weekly storage data on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
