Almaden Minerals Ltd. has provided an update on its ongoing arbitration proceedings with Mexico under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The company is contesting actions by the Mexican government that allegedly blocked the development of its Ixtaca precious metals project and led to the termination of its mineral concessions without compensation. Almaden claims that Mexico unlawfully expropriated its investments, failed to provide fair and equitable treatment, and discriminated against the company. The arbitration panel is considering jurisdictional objections raised by Mexico, which questions the standing of Almaden and its affiliates in bringing forth the claim. Almaden argues that if Mexico's objections are upheld, it could undermine the protections offered by Mexico's investment treaties. The proceedings are being overseen by the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes.
