Honda Motor (HMC) and Nissan Motor are in discussions to collaborate on developing a common operating system for their software-defined vehicles to compete with Tesla (TSLA) and Chinese EV makers, Nikkei Asia reported Monday.

Honda and Nissan will jointly develop a customizable platform with the goal of improving driving performance through software updates over the internet, the media outlet wrote.

The companies plan to launch vehicles powered by the new software integration in the late 2020s, according to the report.

The companies could also standardize parts like semiconductor devices and motors in the future, Nikkei added.

Honda Motor didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
