Electric Power Development Co. (J-Power) has announced plans to enter into the data center business in collaboration with Hitachi Ltd.

The companies will use electricity derived from renewable energy sources to develop data centers for operators of infrastructure such as power plants and railways, which are areas of strength for Hitachi. The companies aim to start operations in fiscal 2029.

J-Power currently operates around 100 renewable energy power plants nationwide, primarily hydroelectric and wind power plants. It will construct data centers in regions near its power plants, which will supply them with electricity, and Hitachi will provide equipment such as servers and AI-related technology.

The companies will conduct demonstration tests in fiscal 2026 and 2027. They will begin by constructing centers that will do data processing to support operations at J-Power's own power plants, including running the plants and troubleshooting. Based on the results of these operations, the companies plan to expand operations to other power plants, railways and water supply and sewage systems, which require advanced information management and proprietary know-how.

Among other energy companies, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. also aims to fully enter the data center business in fiscal 2027.
