President Trump said Scott Bessent could potentially lead the Federal Reserve but the former hedge-fund manager wasn't his top choice because he was doing a good job as Treasury secretary.

"Well he's an option. And he's very good," Trump said Tuesday, adding: "I do like the job he's done. So in that sense, probably not that much of an option."

Bessent is one of several candidates to replace Fed Chair Jerome Powell next year, alongside Kevin Hassett, a key economic adviser to Trump, and Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor.

Both Bessent and Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan weighed in Tuesday on Fed governance and central-bank independence.

"He did a good job today. He's a very soothing force," Trump said of Bessent.
