Hyperfine, Inc. (NASDAQ:HYPR) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 46% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 15% over that time.
Following the firm bounce in price, when almost half of the companies in the United States' Medical Equipment industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.7x, you may consider Hyperfine as a stock not worth researching with its 6.7x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Hyperfine has been relatively sluggish. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance will improve markedly. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.
If you'd like to see what analysts are forecasting going forward, you should check out our free report on Hyperfine. There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Hyperfine's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Despite the lack of growth, the company was still able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders will be pleased, but also have some serious questions to ponder about the last 12 months.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 23% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 10% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Hyperfine's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
Shares in Hyperfine have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Hyperfine's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
