JAKARTA -- Toyota Motor Corp. on Wednesday announced that it will start producing its bZ4X electric sports utility vehicle in Indonesia by the end of this year.

Toyota holds a greater than 30% share of the overall market for new cars in Indonesia, more than any other company. However, it has fallen behind Chinese and South Korean firms in the Southeast Asian nation's EV market. Producing the bZ4X in-country is intended to help the Japanese automaker close the gap.

Hiroyuki Ueda, president of Toyota's Indonesian arm, made the announcement during the media day of the GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show, which is being held in the suburbs of Jakarta. The automaker plans to refit an existing plant to produce the bZ4X. Production volume and other details will be determined later.

Up to now, bZ4X vehicles sold in Indonesia have been imported from Japan. The Indonesian government is promoting its EV industry by through measures such as offering tax incentives for domestically produced EVs. "We felt that it was important to respond to the government's efforts, as well as to show off our EV lineup (in Indonesia)," Ueda said.
