Mattel Aims to Partner with 'Global Leaders' to Support Its Brands -- Market Talk

1253 ET - Barbie is making her way back to the silver screen, this time in animation. Mattel is partnering with Illumination--the studio behind the "Despicable Me" franchise and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie"--on the new film, which isn't yet dated. In addition to its partnership with Illumination, Mattel recently tapped "Wicked"-filmmaker Jon M. Chu to direct a live-action Hot Wheels movie, and began collaborating with OpenAI to develop AI-powered toys and experiences around its portfolio of brands. "We are partnering with best-in-class, global leaders in their domain," Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz says. These partnerships, he says, will "reimagine how far our brands can go." Mattel shares fall 13% after dialing back its full-year outlook. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
