Southern Company, through its subsidiary Georgia Power, has announced a significant regulatory request to the Georgia Public Service Commission $(PSC.AU)$ for certification of approximately 9,900 megawatts (MW) of new energy resources. This initiative is part of an expansion of the state's diverse energy mix aimed at reliably and economically meeting the energy demands of a growing Georgia. The request includes about 8,000 MW from bids submitted in an "all-source" request for proposals (RFP), following the 2022 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). Additionally, Georgia Power seeks approval for an extra 1,886 MW sourced from power purchase agreements with existing resources and new battery energy storage systems paired with solar. This strategic move underscores Georgia Power's commitment to ensuring reliable and resilient energy for its customers, with projects designed to meet projected winter capacity needs from 2029 to 2031.
