Matson, Inc., a leading U.S. carrier in the Pacific, has announced a significant milestone in its ongoing shipbuilding partnership with Hanwha Philly Shipyard, Inc. (HPSI), a subsidiary of Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean. The announcement marks the commencement of construction for the first of three new "Aloha Class" containerships, set to be delivered in 2027 and 2028. These state-of-the-art vessels will replace existing ships in Matson's Hawaii, Guam, and China-Long Beach Express $(CLX)$ services. With a carrying capacity of 3,600 TEU and speeds exceeding 23 knots, the new ships promise enhanced efficiency and capacity, featuring a fuel-efficient hull design and dual-fuel engines capable of operating on liquefied natural gas $(LNG)$. The construction milestone was celebrated with a keel-laying ceremony, symbolizing the strength of Matson's partnership with HPSI and their shared commitment to advancing American shipbuilding.
