La-Z-Boy Cites Slow Housing Market for Declining Traffic -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
08/20

1107 ET - A sluggish housing market is partially to blame for a slowdown in traffic for La-Z-Boy, CEO Melinda Whittington says on a call with analysts. The furniture maker reports same-store sales down 4% in its retail segment as lower demand was only partially offset by higher prices. Traffic industrywide is depressed, Whittington says. Housing transactions are still near 30-year lows as consumers continue to face challenges in an uncertain economy, the CEO says. Industry data for the current quarter continues to be volatile and mixed, with La-Z-Boy's retail public company peers reporting same-store sales down in the low- to mid-single-digit percentage range, Whittington says. Shares fall 14% to $33.69. (dean.seal@wsj.com)
